Waleský horský pony
Je najstarším zaznamenaným pôvodným britským plemenom poníka a vládne názor, že kmeňové stádo poníkov založil na brehu jazera Bala Julius Caesar. Je pravdepodobné, že do rodu primiešal malé množstvo orientálnych koní a do začiatku 20. storočia sa k nim pravidelne primiešavali ďalšie plemená, najvýraznejší bol vplyv araba, anglického plnokrvníka a hackneyho. Jeden z významných vplyvných žrebcov bol anglický plnokrvník Merlin, podľa ktorého sa waleské poníky občas aj dnes nazývajú merliny. Plemenná kniha waleských poníkov je rozdelená na štyri sekcie podľa exteriéru a výšky koní, pričom waleské horské poníky tvoria sekciu A. Sú najmenšie spomedzi štyroch sekcii - ich výška nes
mie presahovať 120 cm. Sú zároveň najstarším plemenom a tvorili kmeňové stádo, z ktorého vznikli ostatné typy. Waleský poník mal veľmi silný vplyv na vývoj mnohých ďalších plemien a takmer vždy im odovzdal kvalitu a nadanie. So znamenitým výsledkom prispel k vývoju jazdeckého poníka. Plemennú knihu waleských poníkov založili v roku 1902 a odvtedy sa vynaložilo obrovské úsilie na vytvorenie ustálených typov. Jeden z najvýznamnejších žrebcov od začiatku 20. storočia bol Dyoll Starlight, ako pod sedlom. Kedysi sa waleské poníky chovali vonku na waleských horách a pahorkatinách, čo malo rozhodujúci vply na ich súčasnú vytrvalosť a pružnosť. Majú osobitne silné zdravie, a keď ide o potravu, sú veľmi skromné. Waleský poník musí mať peknú hlavu arabského typu s milými široko posadenými očami a malými ostražitými ušami. Jeho krk musí mať správnu dĺžku a musí byť klenutý, plecia majú byť šikmé, hrudník musí byť hlboký, chrbát krátky a silný a nohy pekné so zdravými kĺbmi. Musí mať dostatočný obvod hrudníka s oblým hrudným košom a svalnatým zadkom. Obvod záprstia má mimoriadne veľký a holene krátke a silné.
